Share the Risk:

CFA's new workshop turns the
spotlight on Syndicated Loans

By Tim Atkinson

Asset-based loans are currently a great place to invest.  It gets even better if you can share the risk.  That's why CFA launched a new workshop on September 24 providing an "Introduction to Syndicated Asset-Based Loans."

The program was presented by an impressive panel of experts, led out of the gate by Kathleen Milazzo from JP Morgan Chase.  Milazzo's in-depth statistics showed that leveraged loans grew from $14 billion to just shy of $600 billion in the decade leading up to 2007.  During the same period there was a huge swing towards institutional investors who started with a quarter of the market and by the end held the lion's share of the capital.

Dorothy Killeen of Wells Fargo and Jeff McGeary of PNC Bank picked up the thread and showed that in 2011 asset-based loans reached a peak of $101 billion.  That's double the volume from two years earlier, and one-third higher than the previous peak in 2007.  Two lead players, Bank of America and Wells Fargo hold nearly half the market distributed over 130 deals.  Do some quick mental math and you will discover that the average size of those deals was $150 million.  Loans of that size were all the introduction that Glenn Autorino of GE Capital Markets needed, when he took the floor to describe the basics of Syndicate Formation.

The Secured Lender

The October 2012 Digital Edition of The Secured Lender is now available!

Click here to start reading The Turnaround Issue. This issue features the latest news and information on the turnaround and restructuring industries. Topics covered include: how ethical issues in turnaround engagements can affect results, the impact of regulatory shifts on asset valuation and loan portfolios, interviews with CFA's new president, Michael Haddad, and CIT Trade Finance's new president, Jonathan A. Lucas, and a look at growth and incipient decline in synthesis within turnaround management.

  • In the big picture, the goal of ethical turnaround professionals should be to achieve the best possible outcomes for both clients and stakeholders, but financial incentives used by such professionals can have an impact, favorable or not, on outcomes. The key question is: What should lenders view as ideal financial incentives? The answer is not clear. Read more in Ethical Issues in Turnaround Engagements Can Affect Results, on page 16

  • Regulatory Game Changers: Anticipating and Minimizing the Impact of Regulatory Shifts on Asset Valuation and Loan Portfolios, on page 22, contemplates the impact that regulatory change can have on companies and their asset-based lenders and examines what monitoring steps may be taken to anticipate policy shifts, how lenders may guard against potential negative impacts of regulatory change and how to game plan a process to minimize the impact on asset values in the wake of regulatory change.

  • Michael Haddad discusses how he got his start in ABL and his priorities and goals in his new role as CFA president in CFA's New President Shares His Vision for the Future, on page 26. Haddad serves as a managing director of NewStar Financial and head of NewStar Business Credit, the company's asset-based lending division. He also serves as a member of the firm's Management Committee.

  • Turnaround practitioners often see corporate denial as a creature of infinite resource. Often such denial is imbued and embedded very strongly in management, the Board and even lenders. Read more in Turnaround Management: Growth and Incipient Decline in Synthesis, on page 32.
