Education Programs

The unique nature of the Asset-Based Financial Services Industry necessitates training programs which are designed and instructed exclusively by and for Secured Lending professionals. Successful career development in this field requires an overview of basic, traditional practices combined with an awareness of the latest advances in techniques and technologies.


Volunteer industry instructors as well as leading industry service providers donate their time and expertise in 2-4 day workshops offered throughout the country. Class size is limited to assure participants the opportunity to become involved in discussions.

Students are able to meet and mingle with new friends and colleagues from firms across the country. The programs are conducted at quality meeting facilities in major cities with strong concentrations of CFA membership.

Basic Courses

The Basics programs are designed to give a basic overview to the various Asset-Based Lending and Factoring topics. These programs are generally geared towards entry-level professionals with 3 months to two years of industry experience.

ABL & Factoring Basics Workshop (+)
The ABL & Factoring Basics Workshop is a comprehensive two-day program designed to give a soup-to-nuts overview of the ABL & factoring industries, and allow new employees to understand asset-based lending and factoring in two days. More info.

ABL Basics for Underwriters (+)
The ABL Basics for Underwriters Workshop is a two day course created to help the underwriter hone his/her skills in setting up lending parameters on prospective deals by underwriting how all the pieces fit together. A full discussion surrounding the interpretation of data and ratios will be had, and how they should influence how the new loan facility is structured. More info.

Account Management Workshop (+)
The Account Management Workshop is a comprehensive three-day program covering a variety of issues and topics specifically related to managing asset-based lending relationships. Effective communication, both external and internal, is stressed. More info.

Collateral Control Workshop (+)
The Collateral Control Workshop is a comprehensive two-day program covering every aspect of collateral monitoring, operations management and loan administration. Attendees will walk away understanding the importance of their job and the knowledge to strengthen the staff as a whole. More info.

Field Examiner School (+)
The Field Examiner School is a three-day program covering every aspect of field examination techniques and practices. Participants will learn to be their organization’s “eyes and ears” through on-site analysis of accounts receivable, inventory, cash, fixed assets and all other forms of collateral. More info.

Financial Statement Analysis (+)
An intensive financial analysis course focusing on drilling down on the balance sheet and income statement of the borrower/prospect to arrive at true liquidity and viability ratios. More info.

Machinery and Equipment Appraisal Workshop (+)
A one-day program designed to help lending personnel understand various machinery & equipment appraisal concepts, appraisal frequency, application of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice, desktops versus on-site appraisals, red flags in appraisals and other topics. More info.

Basic/Intermediate Courses

Inventory Valuation Workshop (+)
The Inventory Valuation Workshop is a three-day program, which focuses on the role of inventory as collateral in secured transactions from a variety of viewpoints. This program is the only one of its kind in the country, and the only place to get an all-encompassing view of what it takes to properly structure an inventory loan. More info.

Intermediate Courses

Intermediate programs take a more in-depth look at the industry topics covered. Professionals with at least 6 months experience are recommended for these programs.

Fraud Awareness Workshop (+)
The Fraud Awareness Workshop is a three-day program presenting best practices in the prevention and detection of borrower fraud while also recommending fraud prevention procedures for a variety of ABL disciplines. Reinforcing each learning point through numerous case studies, the goal of the program is for participants to understand their roles in mitigating the risk of fraud within their organizations. Operations Workshop (+)
The Operations Workshop is a two-day program that focuses on the daily duties of the Operations Specialist and how to glean important data from information submitted by the borrower. The extrapolation and analysis of key indices will be taught to the analysts so that emerging situations can be effectively analyzed and risks properly managed. More info.

Loan Documentation Workshop (+)
The Loan Documentation Workshop is three-day basic legal documentation course specifically designed for asset-based lenders. The goal is to familiarize participants with all aspects of the loan documentation process and to enable them to be active partners with their legal counsel. More info.

Workouts and Bankruptcy Workshop
The Workouts & Bankruptcy Workshop is a three-day overview of the workouts and bankruptcy process. This program focuses on what’s important in documents in downside scenarios and helps take the mystery out of bankruptcy buzz words. More info.

Advanced Courses

Geared towards managers and senior level professionals, the advanced courses drill down into the specifics of the different Asset-Based Lending and Factoring topics to give professionals the education they need to better their departments. Account managers, loan officers and those at the senior level of field examination will find the advanced programs the perfect choice for them.

Advanced Account Management Workshop (+)
The Advanced Account Management Workshop is a three day course designed to assist the Account Manager in navigating complex issues pertaining to borrowers in asset based lending especially in a difficult economic climate. Topics such as analyzing key financial and collateral data and indices and using those as effective management tools will be discussed.

Advanced Field Examiner Workshop (+)
The Advanced Field Examiner Workshop is a "big-picture" program conducted for field examination managers and senior examiners/auditors. The two-day workshop focuses on major issues and trends affecting the field examination role. More info.

Advanced Legal Issues Workshop
The Advanced Legal Issues Workshop is a three-day forum covering a variety of major legal concerns for asset-based lending professionals. Designed specifically for non-attorneys, the Workshop aims to increase participants' working knowledge of the legal principles that affect their jobs. Commercial Finance Association is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit. Complaints regarding registered sponsors may be submitted to the National Registry of CPE Sponsors through its website:
